The Sunday Five (October 26th-November 1st)

1. Russian Airliner Crashes in Sinai, Killing Everyone Aboard: Kogalymavia Airlines Flight 9268, operated on a MetroJet A321, crashed in the heartland of the Sinai peninsula in Egypt, killing all 224 people on board. Officials still don't know what caused the crash, though reports of technical glitches and a terrorist attack have been floated by the media. The black box has been located and will be analyzed for more information about the crash.

2. Dynamic Airways Jet Catches Fire on Taxiway at Ft. Lauderdale: A Dynamic Airways 767-200 caught fire while the plane was taxiing. A pilot from a plane behind the Dynamic Airways jet noticed that fuel was leaking from the engine and alerted ATC. Minutes later, a fire broke out in the number one engine and the left wing, forcing passengers and crew to evacuate the plane. 21 out of the 101 people aboard were injured.

3. British Airways to Resume Gatwick-New York JFK Service: British Airways will resume daily service from London Gatwick to New York JFK beginning May 1st, 2016. The flight will be operated on 777-200ER equipment. British Airways will compete directly with controversial low cost carrier Norwegian Long Haul.

4. Delta Abandons Dubai and Airlines For America: Delta spent the last week cutting routes and industry ties. First Delta announced that they will end service from Dubai due to "overcapacity" from the subsidized gulf carriers. Delta also cut ties with the Airlines for America (A4A) trade group saying that the group “has failed to support Delta on several key issues, including the growing harm of government-subsidized carriers in the Middle East and the damage the Export-Import Bank does to U.S. airlines. A4A also has advocated for the nation’s air traffic control to be separated from the FAA and put into a private organization — a move opposed by Delta.”

5. FAA Bans E-cigarettes: The FAA has banned the carriage of battery powered electronic cigarettes after multiple smoke and fire incidents involving e-cigarettes.

The "What the Heck?" Story of the Week

An American Airlines plane was taken out of service after an airport contractor was spotted taking a selfie on the wing of the plane where it explicitly says "Do Not Walk." Apparently this wasn't the first time the worker had taken a selfie on a wing with JetBlue reporting that the same worker has pulled the stunt on one of its aircraft.
