The Sunday Five (December 14th-20th)

1. Delta Air Lines Orders 40 Aircraft: Delta Air Lines has placed an order for 20 Embraer ERJ-190 aircraft and 20 Boeing 737-900ER aircraft, in a deal worth $2.6 billion dollars. Earlier this year, Delta planned to order 20 ERJ-190 aircraft and 40 737-900ER aircraft. However the order depended on the ratification of the new pilots contract, which was rejected. Delta has explained its re-visitation to the E-190 plan by saying the new order offers the airline "more compelling economics."

2. Scheduled Flights to Resume Between the U.S. and Cuba: The governments of the U.S. and Cuba have reached an agreement to re-establish scheduled air service between the two countries for the first time since the 1960s. Airlines such as JetBlue, United, and American applauded the decision.

3. Virgin America to Lease 10 Airbus A321neo Aircraft: Virgin America will lease 10 new Airbus A321neo aircraft beginning in 2017. The new A321neos will increase Virgin America's seat capacity by 20%.

4. Southwest to Begin International Service from LAX: Southwest will commence service to Liberia/Guanacaste, Costa Rica, beginning in April of 2016, subject to the government's approval. The flight would be the longest in Southwest's route network.

5. Mango Airlines Announced as Launch Carrier for Connecting Partner Model: South African low cost carrier Mango Airlines, a subsidiary of South African Airways, is the first low cost airline to be accepted to Star Alliance's Connecting Partner Model program. Under the Connecting Partner Model, low cost carriers enter bilateral agreements with selected Star Alliance carriers.

The What the Heck Story of the Week
Fuzhou City (China) Airport firefighters sprayed the wrong plane with foam last week. After crew members saw sparks coming out of the engine of an Air China 737-800, Fuzhou City Airport firefighters sprayed foam on a different Air China 737-800 which had exhaust fumes coming out of its tail. Air traffic control workers quickly alerted the firefighters of their mistake. While the right aircraft was eventually sprayed with foam, the 737-800 that was accidentally sprayed with foam was delayed more than 10 hours.
